With their 17-round selection (#517 overall) in the 2018 MLB Draft, the New York Yankees selected Right-Handed Pitcher Barrett Loseke. He is a 4-Yr Jr at Arkansas. Loseke was never previously drafted.
Loseke worked almost exclusively as a reliever at Arkansas. He appeared in 21 games, throwing 40 innings and posting a 3.35 ERA. Loseke struck out 51 batters but also walked 21.
Loseke’s fastball sits between 89-92 but it plays up due to his quick herky-jerky motion. However, it is for this same reason that he has struggled with command throughout his entire college career.
Velocity and command will both have to improve for Loseke to find success at the next level. It looks like he has a decent ceiling, but his floor is also pretty low.
The Yankees continue to stack up on college arms, Loseke is the 10th pitcher that they have selected from the college ranks.
Fun fact: His second-cousin is Kansas City Royals’ left fielder Alex Gordon.
