Today it was announced that New York Yankees top prospect Gleyber Torres is the Most Valuable Player of the 2016 Arizona Fall League season.  Torres also took home the batting champion award.

The 19-year-old shortstop is the youngest player in the history of the Arizona Fall League to win the award.  He is also the third Yankees prospect to win AFL MVP after Eric Duncan (2005) and Greg Bird (2014).  Gary Sanchez was the runner-up last year.

In 18 games with the Scottsdale Scorpions Torres hit .403 with 25 hits over 62 at bats.  He hit two doubles, one triple, and three home runs while driving in 11 runners.  He walked 14 times and stole four bases.

Torres was recently named the top prospect in the Yankees farm system by Baseball America and won AFL player of the week honors twice.  Once on October 22 and the second time on November 12.  He also represented the Yankees and Scorpions in the AFL Rising Stars game.

After his strong performance in the Arizona Fall League and solid season in Single-A, Torres is expected to open the 2017 season with the Trenton Thunder as announced by Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman.
