Top 75 Prospects Profile #73: Gustavo Campero

Gustavo Campero (Bryan Green)

The Yankees signed catcher Gustavo Campero on July 12, 2016, as an international free agent out of Lorica, Colombia.

2017

Gustavo made his professional debut in the Dominican Summer League where he had six hits in 16 at-bats, including one double, two triples.  He also drove in four runs and walked once while stealing two bases.

On June 26, 2017, he was promoted to the Gulf Coast League, where he spent the rest of the season with the GCL Yankees West.  In the GCL he hit .292/.444/.521 in 30 games, 96 at-bats with seven doubles, three triples, and three home runs.  He also drove in 16 runs and walked 26 times while also stealing 11 bases.

Scouting Report

Campero has impressed many with his ability at the plate and in the field in his first professional season.  He could very well be the next big Yankees catching prospect.  He is not big, only 5’6,” and 182 pounds but has shown the ability to hit for average and has some power potential as a switch-hitting catcher.

Campero is athletic and has demonstrated the ability to be quick on his feet and has above-average speed. He has also shown that he has a great eye at the plate, rarely swinging at pitches out of the strike zone.  Behind the plate, he is strong with an above-average arm and good instincts.

2018 Outlook

Campero was impressive in his first professional season; the switch-hitting catcher has earned a promotion.  We think he is advanced enough to open the 2018 season with the Staten Island Yankees of the NY-Penn League.
