With the 368th overall pick in the 2016 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, the New York Yankees have selected Taylor Widener in the 12th round. Widener was ranked as the 198th best college prospect by D1Baseball for this year’s draft.
The junior out of Aiken, South Carolina started nine games for the University of South Carolina Gamecocks this season. He made 16 total appearances and went 4-2 on the season. In 55 innings pitched, the right-hander recorded 66 strikeouts and held opponents to a .247 batting average. Taylor pitched to a 3.93 ERA in 2016.
Over the summer, Widener was ranked as the 2nd best prospect in the Coastal Plain Collegiate Summer League.
