New York Yankees Vice President of Domestic Amateur Scouting, Damon Oppenheimer, Selected Tanner Burns with the 1112nd overall selection in 37th round of the 2017 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
It seems that Burns has all but made his decision already on whether he will sign or attend college. He said on Titter that “from day one, I was all in for Auburn. I feel my decision to attend Auburn will help my lifelong goal.
According to oanow.com, “Burns, a right-handed pitcher and shortstop from Decatur High School, is capable of coming to Auburn and contributing immediately. On the mound, he 10-1 with an 0.88 ERA and 116 strikeouts over 64 innings, throwing four shutouts and one no-hitter. At the plate, he hit .467 with 16 home runs and 46 RBIs.”
Al.com wrote, “Burns, the Alabama Gatorade Player of the Year and Alabama’s Mr. Baseball, was rated as the No. 38 overall prospect in this year’s draft and the 18th-best high school prospect by Baseball America. He checked in at No. 39 in MLB.com’s pre-draft rankings.”
