New York Yankees Vice President of Domestic Amateur Scouting, Damon Oppenheimer, Selected Alex Mauricio with the 812th overall selection in 27th round of the 2017 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
Mauricio is a two-way player that was drafted as a pitcher out of Norfolk State.
The Midlothian, Virginia native went 4-4 with a 3.49 ERA for the Spartans this season. He tossed 59.1 innings in 2017, struck out 55 opponents while issuing 27 walks.
In 2016, he was named to the All-MEAC first-team as a reliever and to the watch list for the John Olerud Award, which is given to the nation’s top two-way player.
Other than his work on the mound, Mauricio hit .345 with 17 doubles, and drive in 27 runs while playing shortstop and third base for Norfolk State.
