New York Yankees Vice President of Domestic Amateur Scouting, Damon Oppenheimer, Selected Riley Thompson with the 752nd overall selection in 25th round of the 2017 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
MLB.com has said that Thompson’s “electric arm speed” generates his fastball up to 98 miles per hour. His arsenal includes a curveball that features both power and depth, along with a change up providing him with a potential above average third pitch.
He hasn’t pitched much over the last two seasons and his command has not been great when he has been on the mound. Thompson struck out 23 compared to eight walks.
In 2017, the right-hander tossed 14.2 innings in 13 appearances. He pitched to a 1-0 record and a 4.30 ERA.
