New York Yankees Vice President of Domestic Amateur Scouting, Damon Oppenheimer, selected pitcher Garrett Whitlock out of the University of Alabama-Birmingham with the 542nd overall draft pick in the 18th round of the 2017 Draft.
After making only one start during his freshman campaign in 2016 and posting an impressive 3.00 ERA in 51 innings pitched with 46 strikeouts, Whitlock made seven starts this past season and his numbers dipped a bit.
The righty possesses a power fastball and an off-speed pitch to complement that, which supports the thought that he belongs in the pen; however, if he can develop a third pitch to add to his arsenal he has displayed the make-up to make the shift into a starting rotation.
There is a good chance he does not sign with the Yankees and decides to remain in school to hone his skills and develop further.
