New York Yankees Vice President of Domestic Amateur Scouting, Damon Oppenheimer, selected second baseman Chris Hess out of the University of Rhode Island with the 512th overall draft pick in the 17th round of the 2017 Draft.
A four-year player with the Rams, Hess had a breakout season in 2017. He led the team in hits (77), runs scored (44), stolen bases (12) and slashed an impressive .347/.414/.581.
Baseball America ranked him the eighth best prospect in the Atlantic 10 division for 2017.
Hess showcased great fundamentals in the field at second base, as well as above-average power and speed. He hit 10 triples for the Rams in 2016 and followed that up with 33 extra base hits this past season – including eight home runs.
Hess is eligible to return to school for a fifth season, so it will be interesting to see how he uses that in negotiating with the Yankees.
