New York Yankees Vice President of Domestic Amateur Scouting, Damon Oppenheimer, Selected Ricky Surum with the 482nd overall selection in 16th round of the 2017 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
Surum is drafted as a senior out of the University of Mount Olive in North Carolina. The Atlanta, Georgia native was named the 2016-17 UMO Outstanding Male Athlete and as a first-team all-conference selection.
According to umotrojans.com, Surum was an iron-man, starting in all 58 games at shortstop this season. Ricky led the Trojans in batting average (.372), hits (87), doubles, (19), triples (5), RBI (61), and stolen bases (25), also slamming 12 home runs as well.
Defensively, in 255 total chances Surum made 10 errors, giving him an impressive .961 fielding percentage.
