New York Yankees Vice President of Domestic Amateur Scouting, Damon Oppenheimer, Selected Chad Whitmer with the 302nd overall selection in 10th round of the 2017 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
The senior was the University of Southern Illinois ace this past season. Across 104 innings pitched, the right-hander went 6-3 with a 3.46 ERA. He struck out 95 opponents, issued 26 walks and held opponents to a .257 batting average against over 15 starts.
Whitmer’s 95 strikeouts in 2017, were the most from a SIU Salukis pitcher since 2005 and placed him tied for eighth place overall in school history in the category.
The South Bend, Indiana native earned second-team All-MVC honors and was a two-time MVC Pitcher of the Week winner.
