Pinstriped Performances: Thursday, June 27, 2019



On Thursday, nine games were played in the New York Yankees, including the two Gulf Coast League teams going up against each other and a doubleheader in Scranton Wilkes-Barre. There was a walk-off win in Staten Island, a top Yankee pitching prospect made his return to the mound in the Gulf Coast League, and a player in the Dominican Summer League became the second Yankees player in the organization to hit for the cycle since Sunday.

Raynel Espinal had eight strikeouts and allowed one run over six innings for Scranton Wilkes-Barre in Game 2 of their doubleheader against Buffalo. He has six or more strikeouts in four starts this year. (Matt Bufano)

Scranton Wilkes-Barre Railriders (Triple-A): The Railriders (46-32) split their doubleheader against the Buffalo Bisons. They won Game 1, 6-4, and lost Game 2, 1-0.

Game 1

Breyvic Valera went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a walk, a double, a solo home run in the bottom of the first (9), and three RBIs (26,27,28). Valera is hitting .348 with 10 RBIs in the month of June. (Matt Bufano)

Game 2

Trenton Thunder (Double-A): The Thunder (43-31) lost to the New Hampshire Fishercats, 4-2.

Garrett Whitlock had a quality start in a no-decision. He allowed one run on nine hits and struck out seven over six innings. 64 of 105 pitches were strikes. Whitlock has gone six innings in five straight starts and has seven K’s in back-to-back outings. (Robert M. Pimpsner)

Tampa Tarpons (Single-A Advanced): The Tarpons (32-43) defeated the Daytona Tortugas, 7-2.

  • Pablo Olivares: 3-for-5, 1 run scored, 1 triple, 1 RBI (14). Olivares has had multiple hits in five of the last eight games. 
  • Oswaldo Cabrera: 2-for-5, 1 stolen base, 2 RBIs (27,28).
  • Dermis Garcia: 1-for-4, 1 RBI (50).
  • Jason Lopez: 3-for-4, 1 run scored, 1 stolen base. This is Lopez’s second three-hit game of the season. 
  • Angel Aguilar: 2-for-4, 1 run scored, 1 stolen base, 1 double, 1 RBI (12).
  • Jio Orozco (2-2): 5 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 4 H, 3 BB, 2 K’s. 47 of 81 pitches were strikes. 
  • JP Sears (1st save): 4 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 1 BB, 4 K’s. 40 of 59 pitches were strikes. 

Charleston Riverdogs (SIngle-A): The Riverdogs (40-38) lost 7-2 to the Asheville Tourists.

  • Brandon Lockridge: 1-for-4, 1 double.
  • Canaan Smith: 1-for-4, 1 double.
  • Welfrin Mateo: 1-for-3, 1 run scored. Mateo has a hit in four straight games. 
  • Kyle Gray: 0-for-2, 1 run scored, 1 walk.
  • Anthony Seigler: 0-for-3, 1 walk. Seigler has had a walk in five of the last six games. 
  • Luis Medina (1-6): 4.1 IP, 5 ER, 5 H, 4 BB, 3 K’s. 47 of 87 pitches were strikes. 
  • Jhony Brito: 4.2 IP, 2 ER, 6 H, 4 K’s. 40 of 60 pitches were strikes. 

Staten Island Yankees (Short-Season): The Yankees (7-5) defeated the Hudson Valley Renegades, 3-2, in 10 innings.

Tim Hardy was dominant out of the bullpen for Staten Island. He struck out six batters over three perfect innings. 27 of 34 pitches were strikes. At one point, Hardy had five straight strikeouts. Pulaski Yankees (Rookie Advanced): The Yankees (5-3) defeated the Princeton Rays, 5-1.

  • Oliver Dunn: 1-for-5, 1 run scored, 2 RBIs (8,9).
  • Gustavo Campero: 1-for-2, 1 walk, 1 double, 1 RBI (1).
  • Ryder Green: 2-for-4, 1 run scored. Green is 8-for-18 in his last four games at the plate. 
  • Madison Santos: 1-for-2, 1 run scored, 2 walks.
  • Chad Bell: 1-for-4, double. The 19th Round pick in the 2019 MLB Draft has a hit in each of the first three games of his career. 
  • Ryan Anderson: 3 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 K’s. 22 of 35 pitches were strikes. Anderson was making his professional debut. He was the Yankees’ 12th Round pick in the 2019 MLB Draft. 
  • Nelvin Correa (1-0): 5 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 6 K’s. 44 of 54 pitches were strikes. 
  • Derek Craft: 1 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 K’s. 14 of 24 pitches were strikes. The 16th Round pick in the 2018 MLB Draft has allowed only one hit and struck out eight in the first three outings of the year. 

Gulf Coast League (Rookie): It was intrasquad action on Thursday as GCL Yankees East (2-1) defeated GCL Yankees West (1-2) by a final score of 8-5.

GCL East

  • Kevin Alcantara: 2-for-5, 1 run, 1 triple, 2 RBIs (2,3).
  • Eric Wagaman: 1-for-3, 1 RBI (1). Wagaman made his 2019 debut after playing the 2018 season with the Staten Island Yankees. 
  • Miguel Marte: 1-for-4, 1 run scored, 1 RBI (2).
  • D’Vaughn Knowles: 1-for-5, 1 double, 1 RBI (3).
  • Javier Reynoso: 2-for-5, 1 run scored. The 33rd Round pick in the 2019 MLB Draft picked up the first two hits of his career. 
  • Alexander Vargas: 2-for-4, 3 runs scored, 1 walk, 1 stolen base. Vargas extended his hit streak to 10 games and has six multi-hit games during this streak. 
  • Renso Mejia (1-0): 3.2 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 1 BB, 4 K’s. This is the second time in three outings with the DSL and GCL that Mejia has had four strikeouts in a game. 
  • Jose Peguero: 1.2 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K.
  • Carlos Gomez: 1 IP, 4 ER, 1 H, 4 BB, 1 K.
  • Ismael Gomez:  1 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 K.

GCL West

  • Kyle MacDonald: 2-for-5, 1 triple, three RBIs (1,2,3). MacDonald was the Yankees’ 27th Round pick in the 2019 MLB Draft.
  • Nelson Medina: 1-for-4, 1 run scored, 1 stolen base, 1 RBI (2).
  • Ronny Rojas: 1-for-5, 1 double.
  • Pedro Diaz: 0-for-3, 2 walks, 1 run scored, 1 stolen base.
  • Jose Colmenares: 1-for-3, 2 walks, 1 run scored. Colmenares has at least one hit in four of the five games he’s played in this year. 
  • Edward Paredes (0-1): 4.1 IP, 4 R (3 ER), 6 H, 1 BB, 4 K’s.
  • Shaine McNeely: 1.2 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 K. McNeely was the Yankees’ 16th Round pick in the 2019 MLB Draft and he made his professional debut. 
  • Adonny Rojas: 1.2 IP, 2 ER, 2 H, 2 BB, 2 K’s.
  • Argelis Herrera: 1.1 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K’s.

Dominican Summer League (Rookie): The DSL Yankees (11-9) defeated the DSL Angels, 13-6.

  • Maikol Escotto: 5-for-5, 2 runs scored, 1 double, 1 triple, 1 home run (2), 5 RBIs (7,8,9,10,11). Escotto hit for the cycle and the shortstop is hitting .333 in the first 16 games of his career. 
  • Marcos Cabrera: 3-for-3, 2 runs scored, 2 walks, 2 triples, 1 RBI (9). Cabrera has drawn a walk in each of the last five games. 
  • Alex Garcia: 2-for-4, 3 runs scored, 1 walk, 1 stolen base, 1 RBI (2). Garcia has drawn a walk in all five games he’s played in. 
  • Asdrubal Alvarez: 1-for-5, 1 run scored, 1 double, 1 RBI (3).
  • Kevyn Camacho: 1-for-3, 2 walks, 2 runs scored, 1 RBI (3). Camacho has a hit or an RBI in three of the four games he’s played in this year. 
  • Kelvin Espino: 2-for-5, 1 triple.
  • Carlos Verdecia: 2-for-4, 1 run scored, 1 walk, 1 triple. Verdecia is 5-for-7 in the first two games he’s played in this year. 
  • Josue Panacual: 4 IP, 4 ER, 3 H, 4 BB, 4 K.
  • Albert Carrizo (1-0): 2 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 2 BB, 2 K.
  • Luis Velasquez (1st save): 3 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 1 BB, 3 K.
