Pinstriped Performances: Sunday, July 7, 2019



On Sunday, there were a pair of doubleheaders in the New York Yankees organization. In the t eight games that were played, the affiliates combined for a 5-3 record with Scranton Wilkes-Barre and Tampa not losing a game in those doubleheaders. Meanwhile, one young Staten Island pitcher continues to shine in his first couple of professional starts while a Yankee prospect threw six shutout innings for Trenton.

Scranton Wilkes-Barre Railriders (Triple-A): The Railriders (52-37) swept both games of their doubleheader with the Rochester Red Wings. They won Game 1, 6-3, and Game 2, 7-4.

Game 1

Zack Zehner went 1-for-3 with 2 runs scored and a three-run home run in the bottom of the third (3). Zehner has two home runs in the last five games. (Robert M Pimpsner/Pinstriped Prospects)

Game 2

Kyle Higashioka went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and a pair of RBIs (35,36).  (Cheryl Pursell)
  • Tyler Wade: 2-for-2, 2 runs scored, 1 walk, 1 double, 1 RBI (24). Wade has multiple hits in 7 of the last 10 games. 
  • Thairo Estrada: 1-for-3, 1 run scored, 1 double, 2 RBIs (15,16). Estrada has 7 RBIs in his last 10 games. 
  • Trey Amburgey: 1-for-3, 1 run scored, 1 home run (15), 1 RBI (46).
  • Erik Kratz: 2-for-3, 1 run scored, 1 double. Kratz is on a 9-game hit streak. 
  • Zack Zehner: 1-for-3, 1 run scored.
  • Ryan McBroom: 0-for-2, 1 RBI (40). McBroom has driven in a run in 3 straight games. 
  • Billy Burns: 0-for-2, 1 run scored, 1 walk.
  • Stephen Tarpley: 2 IP, 4 ER, 3 H, 2 BB, 1 K. 20 of 33 pitches were strikes. 
  • Will Carter (1-0): 3 IP, 0 ER, 2 H. 30 of 43 pitches were strikes. Carter was making his Triple-A debut after being promoted from Double-A Trenton on July 6. 
  • Jonathan Holder: 1 IP, 0 ER, 2 H. 15 of 20 pitches were strikes. It is the first time Holder hasn’t allowed a run in 4 outings. 
  • Joe Harvey (7th save): 1 IP, 0 ER, 0 H. 4 of 6 pitches were strikes. Harvey ends the first half with five straight scoreless outings. 

Trenton Thunder (Double-A): The Thunder (46-39) held the Hartford Yard Goats to 3 hits in a 3-0 victory.

Albert Abreu pitched well for Trenton in a no-decision. He allowed two hits, struck out six, and walked three over six shutout innings. 57 out of 92 pitches were strikes.   • Kyle Holder: 1-for-3, 1 run scored, 1 RBI (27).
  • Hoy Jun Park: 1-for-4, 1 run scored.
  • Isiah Gilliam: 1-for-3. The Yankees’ 20th Round pick in 2015 had his first hit since being promoted from Single-A Advanced Tampa on July 3. 
  • Mandy Alvarez: 0-for-3, 1 walk.
  • Rashad Crawford: 0-for-2, 1 walk.
  • Nick Nelson (3-2): 3 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 K. 27 of 32 pitches were strikes. It is Nelson’s first relief appearance of the year. 

Futures Game Update: Deivi Garcia got to pitch for the American League in the SIRIUS XM All-Star Futures Game. Garcia got the start and threw a 1-2-3 top of the first, which included striking out Christian Pache looking. 10 of 14 pitches were strikes. Garcia is leaving Trenton and being promoted to Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre. He is our top prospect in the Yankees organization:

Tampa Tarpons (Single-A Advanced): The Tarpons (37-48) swept both games of their doubleheader against the Clearwater Threshers.  They won Game 1, 4-1, and Game 2, 2-0.

Game 1

Game 2

  • Estevan Florial: 1-for-3, 1 RBI (16).
  • Oswaldo Cabrera: 1-for-3, 1 RBI (32).
  • Jason Lopez: 1-for-3.
  • Omar Carrizales: 1-for-2, 1 run scored.
  • David Metzgar: 1-for-3. Metzgar is on a 4-game hit streak. 
  • Pablo Olivares: 1-for-3, 1 run scored.
  • Trevor Stephan: 2 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 2 K. 20 of 30 pitches were strikes. 
  • Matt Wivinis (5th save): 1 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K. 9 of 13 pitches were strikes. Wivinis hasn’t allowed a run in 6 of his last 7 outings. 

Charleston Riverdogs (Single-A): The Riverdogs (45-43) lost 5-2 to the Greenville Drive.

  • Anthony Seigler: 1-for-3, 1 walk, 1 RBI (6).
  • Canaan Smith: 2-for-4. Smith has multiple hits in 3 of the last 4 games. 
  • Matt Pita: 1-for-4. Pita has a hit in 7 of the last 8 games and is hitting .306 over the last 12 games. 
  • Kyle Gray: 1-for-4, 1 run scored.
  • Josh Stowers: 1-for-3.
  • Max Burt: 0-for-3, 1 run scored, 1 stolen base.
  • Luis Gil (4-4): 5 IP, 4 ER, 1 H, 4 BB, 4 K. 54 of 93 pitches were strikes. Gil did not allow a hit in the first five innings of the game. Gil is ranked 3rd on our Top 100 prospects list
  • Ron Marinaccio: 2.2 IP, 1 ER, 0 H, 3 BB, 2 K.
  • Dalton Lehnen: 0.1 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 K.

Staten Island Yankees (Short-Season): The Yankees (11-10) lost 3-2 to the Connecticut Tigers.

TJ Sikkema pitched well in his second outing with Staten Island. He allowed one hit and struck out three over three scoreless innings. 21 of 30 pitches were strikes.   • Everson Pereira: 1-for-3, 1 run scored, 1 home run (1), 1 RBI (3). The 18-year-old outfielder is 8th on our Top 100 prospect list. 
  • Luis Santos: 1-for-2, 1 run scored, 1 walk.
  • Oswald Peraza: 1-for-4. Peraza has a hit in 6 of the last 7 games. 
  • Austin Gardner: 2 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 6 K. 28 of 43 pitches were strikes. The 6 strikeouts tie a career-high from August 30, 2018 with Staten Island. 
  • Justin Wilson: 1 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 BB, 3 K. 19 of 27 pitches were strikes. 
  • Rodney Hutchison (0-1): 1 IP, 1 ER, 1 H. 7 of 12 pitches were strikes. 
  • Aaron McGarity: 2 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K. 15 of 23 pitches were strikes. 

Pulaski Yankees (Rookie-Advanced): The Yankees (10-8) lost to the Bristol Pirates, 9-3.

  • Roberto Chirinos: 3-for-5, 1 run scored, 1 RBI (6). It is Chirinos’ first 3-hit game of the year. 
  • Ryder Green: 2-for-4, 1 double, 1 RBI (11).
  • Oliver Dunn: 1-for-4, 1 RBI (11).
  • Antonio Cabello: 1-for-2, 2 runs scored, 3 walks, 1 double. Cabello is on a 5-game hitting streak. 
  • Jake Pries: 1-for-4, 1 double. 4 of Pries’ first 6 hits with Pulaski have been doubles. 
  • Madison Santos: 1-for-4.
  • Gabriel Mora: 1-for-4.
  • Yoendrys Gomez (3-1): 5 IP, 4 R (1 ER), 5 H, 3 BB, 5 K. 47 of 82 pitches were strikes. Gomez still has a 0.86 ERA on the year. He is 10th on our Top 100 prospects list. 
  • Jackson Bertsch: 2 IP, 2 ER, 2 H, 4 K. 26 of 34 pitches were strikes. 
  • Nelson Alvarez: 1 IP, 3 ER, 3 H, 2 BB, 1 K. 18 of 31 pitches were strikes. The 13th Round pick from this year’s draft was making his Pulaski debut after being promoted on July 5.
