Widener, 22, is a conversion project. The former reliever spent his 2017 season in the rotation for the Tampa Yankees where he went 7-8 with a 3.39 ERA and 129 strikeouts in 119 1/3 innings. It was an underrated season for the former 12th round draft pick, who is following in the footsteps of Chance Adams.
This season Widener was tied with only Chance Adams for the most games started in the entire Yankees system with 27. Also, he was fourth in the organization in total strikeouts.
