Opponent: At Baltimore Orioles
Result: 6-5 loss
2017 Record: 1-3
Game Summary: Matt Holiday put the Yankees on the board in the first inning with an RBI single. He later homered in the top of the third off Oriole starter Ubaldo Jimenez. Gary Sanchez tacked on two more runs in the fifth, also homering off Jimenez. Oriole home runs proved to doom the Yankees in Friday night’s series opening loss to Baltimore. Luis Severino pitched five innings, gave up six hits, four runs (all earned), one walk and struck out six. Manny Machado’s three-run dinger in the bottom of the fifth brought the Orioles back within a run, making the score 5 to 4. In the bottom of the seventh, Baltimore capitalized on a Chase Headley error as Seth Smith sent an 2-1 Tyler Clippard fastball over the right field wall. Brett Gardner was an offensive standout, going 3-5 with two stolen bases.
Gary Sanchez – Sanchez went 2-4 with a home run (his first of the season), single, two runs batted in and a walk.
Greg Bird – Bird took another 0-4 in Friday night’s game. He struck out three times and is now batting .063 on the season.
Aaron Judge – Judge went 0-3 with two strikeouts and a walk against Baltimore Firday night.
Jonathan Holder – Holder tossed a scoreless two thirds of an inning. He struck out Mark Trumbo swinging and got Wellington Castillo to line-out to third. After recording the first two outs in the bottom of the 6th, Jonathan was lifted in favor of Tommy Layne due to a lefty on lefty matchup with Hyun Soo Kim scheduled to bat.
