Winter League Report: Gomez Pitches Shutout in Debut

We are a week in down in the Dominican Republic, and several Yankees prospects have already made their Winter League debuts, including Anyelo Gomez, Abiatal Avelino, and Mike Ford.

Gomez, pitched on Sunday, October 15 with a shutout inning of relief for Gigantes del Cibao against the Toros del Este.  He came into the game in the sixth inning and struck out the first batter he faced before getting two quick first pitch outs on the next two batters to complete his outing.

Abiatal Avelino came into the game in the seventh inning as a pinch hitter for the designated hitter.  He went 1-for-3 with a single and 2 RBIs.  His hit and RBIs came in the 11th inning when with the bases loaded he lined a single to right.

Mike Ford has had tough first two games this winter.  In eight at-bats he has yet to record a base hit.  But he has walked and scored a run.

Alexander Palma continues to hit well in the Venezuelan Winter League.  The young outfielder is batting .545 with 12 base hits in five games for Leones Del Caracas.  Two of his hitters were doubles, and he has driven in three runs while also stolen one base.

On the mound, Daniel Alvarez pitched a shutout 1 2/3 innings with a strikeout for the Cardenales de Lara.

Several Yankees have yet to get into a game this winter.  In the Dominican Winter League Eduardo Rivera is currently on the roster for Aguilas Cibaenas, right-handed pitcher Jose Pena is with Estrellas de Oriente. While  Raynel Espinal and Adonis Rosa are with Gigantes del Cibao.  Catcher Wilkin Castillo is with Leones del Escogido.

In the Venezuelan Winter League right-handed pitcher Luis Cedeno is on the roster for Caribes de Anzoategui while pitcher Gabriel Gonzalez is listed on the roster for Tigres de Aragua.
