It was a Star Wars themed night for the Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders and they were able to celebrate a 8-1 victory over the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs with a return from the Jedi himself, Matt Holliday.
The Iron Pigs kicked the scoring off in the top of the second inning when the first batter of the frame, Andrew Pullin, hit a home run on a line drive to right field.
That would be the last of the Lehigh Valley fortune for the night. The RailRiders would answer right back in the bottom of the second inning. A single and a walk started the inning with Jake Cave stepping up to the plate. He roped a double on a fly ball to right field scoring Billy McKinney. That was the beginning of a five RBI night for Cave.
The bottom of the fourth inning saw Matt Holliday take a single to center field with one out. Two batters later, third baseman Miguel Andujar hit a two-run home run over the left field fence. This put SWB up 4-1.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the one of a kind switch pitcher Pat Venditte took the mound for LHV. Cave welcomed him to the ball game with a home run to to right field and adding another run to the RailRider lead.
The very next inning, Matt Holliday collected his second hit on the evening and finished 2 for 4 in his first baseball action since landing on the disabled list on June 28th. Another McKinney single put two runners on bringing up Cave again. He promptly cleared the bases with a crushed home run over the retired numbers at PNC Field. That capped a 3-3 night for Cave and put the RailRiders up by an 8-1 margin.
Nick Rumbelow got the win in relief for SWB. He came out of the bullpen to pitch 2.2 innings, giving up no runs and striking out three.
The RailRiders take on Lehigh Valley for the series finale. The Iron Pigs’ starter is still TBD but for SWB, Domingo German (2-1, 3.76 ERA) is on the mound. The game is a 1:05pm start at PNC Field.
