The New York Yankees selected Zach Hess in the 35th round of the 2016 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. The Louisiana State commit played for Liberty Christian Academy in Virginia during 2016.

Evaluators have praised Hess for his plus makeup and bulldog mentality on the mound. He attacks hitters with his plus fastball that has been clocked as high as 97 miles per hour. He also features a good hard slider in his arsenal and not shown much of a change up. Some scouts compare him to Washington Nationals All-Star Max Scherzer, while others see him as a future reliever.

His delivery has garnered some concern, as some worry about his head movement. Baseball America ranked him as the 6th best prospect in the state of Virginia and 167th in the nation.
