The New York Yankees selected Isiah Gilliam in the 20th round of the 2015 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Gilliam was ranked by Baseball America as the 151st best prospect available in last year’s draft. He signed for $550,000, which is way above the $100,000 slot for draft picks after the 10th round.
The Lilburn, Georgia native attended Chiopla College for one year after graduating high school at age 17. In 52 games played, he led the team in runs batted in (52) and went on to hit .362 on the season. Gilliam’s performance earned him a Third Team All-American NJCAA selection.
Gilliam made his professional debut in 2015 playing for the Gulf Coast League Yankees 2 affiliate. In 42 games, he batted .296 with one home run, one triple, 11 doubles, 23 runs batted in and 12 runs scored. He absolutely crushed left handed pitching by hitting .348 in 46 at bats against southpaws.
The first baseman has above average bat speed along with plus raw power from both sides of the plate. Isiah was previously drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 23rd round of the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft but elected to attend Chipola College.
