New York Yankees Vice President of Domestic Amateur Scouting, Damon Oppenheimer, Selected Austin Gardner with the 272nd overall selection in ninth round of the 2017 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
Gardner is drafted out of University of Texas-Arlington, but spent his freshman season with Wichita State before transferring to a Cisco Junior College for his sophomore season.
2017 was Gardner’s best statistical season by far. In 44.2 innings, the right-hander pitched to a 2-1 record and a 2.42 ERA. The college senior struck out 55 and issued 10 walks. Even though he did make a start, he was the Mavericks prominent reliever.
The Coppell, Texas native appeared in a team-leading 29 games this season and held opponents to a .222 batting average against. He showed tremendous poise by only allowing seven of a team-leading 22 inherited runners to score.
