New York Yankees Vice President of Domestic Amateur Scouting, Damon Oppenheimer, selected right-handed pitcher Kyle Zurak out of Radford University with the 242nd overall draft pick in the eighth round of the 2017 Draft.
Zurak, 22, is a local kid from East Amherst, NY, who was considered the 611th top RHP prospect in the country out of Williamsville North High School in 2013.
In four years at Radford, the senior was used primarily as the team’s closer, but he made four starts (all this season) and pitched to a 4-4 record overall. Zurak is coming off of his best college season by far where he threw 60 innings and posted a 2.40 ERA with an astounding 73 strikeouts and only 22 walks. He also recorded nine saves this season.
Zurak features a fastball that sits in the mid-90s and that is complemented by a sharp breaking ball. His two plus-pitch repertoire makes him a prime candidate to be a bullpen arm in the future, but he’s shown the ability to start and that versatility should prove to be valuable moving forward.
