New York Yankees Vice President of Domestic Amateur Scouting, Damon Oppenheimer, selected right-handed pitcher Dalton Higgins out of Dallas Baptist University with the 212th overall draft pick in the seventh round of the 2017 Draft.
Higgins, 21, has primarily worked out of the pen for Dallas Baptist for the last three seasons. Although he made three starts in 2015, and five starts last year, Higgins has been used strictly as the team’s setup man this season where he has posted a 3.15 ERA in 40 innings pitched with 40 strikeouts to only 17 walks.
Higgins throws his fastball in the low-to-mid 90s and it is considered a plus-pitch. Higgins also showcases a slider, but that is thought to be a below-average pitch that will require some work if he is going to have success with it at the next level.
He will definitely need some seasoning, but Higgins could be a productive arm down the line out of the pen if he can sharpen his slider.
