New York Yankees Vice President of Domestic Amateur Scouting, Damon Oppenheimer, Selected right-handed pitcher Glenn Otto out of Rice with the 152nd overall pick in the fifth round of the 2017 MLB Draft.
Otto, 21, was ranked by MLBPipeline.com as the 96th best prospect in the 2017 draft but fell to the Yankees due to injury, sitting out some time this year with a tired arm. His fastball topped out at 97 miles per hour out of the bullpen and he backs it up with a 12-6 curveball and a rarely used changeup.
Because of injury it is expected that the Yankees will limit his playing time this year should he turn pro. Long-term many scouts and evaluators believe he has the stuff and mentality to be a starter in professional baseball.
Over his college career at Rice he owns a 18-6 record with a 2.62 ERA over 82 games, 4 starts, striking out 222 batters over 172 innings. He currently tied for fourth in Rice’s all-time saves leaders with 17 saves.
