Last night the Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League had their opening day and three New York Yankees are currently listed on the rosters of some of the teams. Two of them, Bryan Mitchell and Cito Culver played last night.
Culver, 23, was a former first round pick that has dazzled defensively but struggled at the plate. This past season he made it to Triple-A as an organizational player and this winter he is playing for Indios de Mayaguez. Last night he batted ninth and played third base in a game against Cangrejeros de Santurce.
Cito’s first at bat came in the top of the second inning when he worked a walk. He did not move any further in that inning. His next two at bats he struck out swinging before reaching base on a force out in the top of the eighth. He moved to second after a single but did not go further.
Meanwhile Yankees pitcher Bryan Mitchell got the start for Gigantes de Carolina. He did not get the decision after throwing 3 2/3 innings, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on a walk and 4 hits. He struck out 3 of the 16 hitters he faced.
