BURLINGTON, VT – Staten Island Yankees centerfielder Jeff Hendrix has increased his hitting streak to 8 games as the Baby Bombers defeated the Vermont Lake Monsters to take the series and recapture first place in the McNamara Division.
Staten Island scored first, plating a run in the fourth inning. Thairo Estrada singled to start the inning, moved to second on a wild pitch and then after a fly out would score on a double to center by Junior Valera.
The lead did not last long as Vermont would plate 2 in their half of the fourth off of starter Kolton Mahoney. Mahoney struck out 3 batters over 4 innings of work, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits and a walk.
In the top of the fifth inning the Yankees would tie the game. Kevin Cornelius singled to open the inning. Moved to second on a 1-out single by Jake Hernandez before scoring on a double to left by Jeff Hendrix. The game would remain tied up at 2 until the tenth inning.
Will Carter took over on the mound in the fifth inning and pitched 3 inning of shutout baseball allowing a walk and striking out 4. The win went to Michael Schaub who threw 2 innings of work, striking out 1.
The Baby Bombers took the lead in the top of the tenth inning after Jeff Hendrix doubled, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly.
Andre Del Bosque pitched a perfect bottom of the tenth inning to earn the save, striking out 2 batters.
On Wednesday night the Staten Island Yankees will attempt to go for the series sweep with Yoel Espinal on the mound for the Baby Bombers.
